We Love Woolwich!

Welcome to the beta version of the We Love Woolwich website. It is fully functional, and all submitted content will be in the final version, however aesthetic improvements, bug fixing etc. will be going on. Please help by reporting any issues or bugs you encounter.

This site will include history, maps and current issues about Woolwich (and the surrounding areas), a town in south-east London with a long and interesting history, and possibly an exciting future. you can submit your knowledge and opinions about the Woolwich area- either formally as an article or more informally on the discussion forum.

Having undergone a slump in the late 20th Century, Woolwich is now undergoing something of a renaissance. However, the price of this seems to be the destruction of many of Woolwich's landmarks, like the planned demolition of the art deco Co-Op building on Powis Street (the tower of which is shown on the left), and the in-progress demolition of the Love Lane area, including the old Post Office. What do you think of the plans for Woolwich?

Register for the site and let us know! Registered users can submit full articles. We want everything- your memories, opinions and photographs of Woolwich and anything else you think is relevant.

This site is an independent entity, run from living rooms with love for this fantastic town of ours. We want as many people as possible to get involved. This site is for everyone who loves Woolwich.

IMPORTANT: Petition to save the Art Deco Co-Op!
Please sign the petition and spread the word!

The Art Deco Co-Op on Powis Street, Woolwich is a well-loved local landmark, sadly earmarked for demolition by Greenwich Council, despite recommendations by English Heritage that it is a vital part of the townscape and worth preserving.

The building does not meet criteria for listing, but it is a fine example of art deco and is a vital part of the west end of Powis Street, which includes other buildings of the period that are occupied and thus safe. The Co-Op is a vital part of Woolwich's "Art Deco Quarter" and the shell, at least, should be preserved and recycled in the planned Woolwich Triangle development rather than demolished.

UPDATE: I emailed the general planning address with the petition and got a reply today. See forum thread on the co-op for more details. I am assured that the petition will be taken into consideration!

PAPER PETITIONS ARE NOW BEING SPREAD AROUND: Currently available at Seventh Sun, Harry Perry Cycles, Specsavers.
